"A totally new driving experience, a class unto itself" - Citroen SM advertising 1971
The Citroen SM: a mystical marriage of French genius with Italian motoring sophistication. On top of the DS series, the Parisian manufacturer wanted to create a potent and prestigious premium model. Citroën had decent but not brilliant engines to offer. Therefore, it bought in from the then ailing Maserati. For the compact V6 of 2670 cm³ and 170 HP in carburetion (178 with injection) Giulio Alfieri drew, the particularly fluid line came from the pen of Citroën's design chief Robert Opron. The result was presented at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show: a highly advanced travel machine, designed to tour at high cruising speeds over a growing European network of freeways. From Paris to the Cote d'Azur in a morning with a full 90-liter tank, quoi. Until long after its commercial demise in 1975, the SM was one of the last true Grandes Routières. SM would stand for Spécial Maserati, but the afficionados also liked to call it Sa Majesté.

Our 1971 Citroën SM is one of the first examples produced and is still a very original example that has never been fully restored and still has the sturdiness of 1971. Delivered new in Switzerland and one could say that it seemed like it was delivered new yesterday, the bottom and body are completely rust free. The original color "Verts des tropiques" was carefully reapplied to perfection and ensures that the unique lines of this beautiful specimen only stand out more. In addition to its very original condition, the car has also been correctly maintained technically over the years and taken care of where necessary. For example, in 2015 the original matching numbers V6 Maserati engine was completely overhauled by a true lemon specialist and that is still noticeable today: when starting the car you immediately feel how smoothly the car runs which is only encouraged while driving. Its manual gearbox shifts tremendously smoothly and is easy to operate. The speed-dependent power steering that makes steering extremely direct performs perfectly at both high and low speeds, and combine this with the extremely comfortable hydro-pneumatic suspension and this is the key to the success of every unforgettable drive. The interior exudes pure seventies and is still the original with which she rolled off the assembly line. The padding of the seats, although to maintain the ideal seating position, has been renewed but also here for the sake of originality the original leather has been reapplied according to the rules of art.

In short, a very original copy that has always been cared for to perfection but also completed with a wonderful history.
