The Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9, the high-performance version of the W116 S-Class saloon, made its debut at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show. It was based on the long-wheelbase version of the 1972 W116 chassis and featured the robust Mercedes-Benz M100 V8 engine and full hydro-pneumatic suspension. Remarkably, it was the first passenger car to be fitted with a modern ABS system, incorporating the Bosch four-wheel multi-channel electronic anti-lock braking system introduced in 1978. For several years the 450SEL 6.9 held the title of the fastest accelerating and fastest European saloon, leaving an indelible mark on automotive history. Its impact was recognised in 1975 with the prestigious Car of the Year award.

Our stunning 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL proudly displays the 6.9 designation on the tailgate, a clear signal to connoisseurs that this is no ordinary S-Class. It stands as the “biggest and baddest” Benz you can find. This particular model is one of just 7,380 units produced in Germany, where it was initially delivered to its proud first owner. In the year 1978, this model commanded a price range equivalent to that of the renowned Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, which was the ultimate benchmark for luxury during that era.

The equipment of this 450SEL 6.9 is truly impressive, ranging from air conditioning, heat-absorbing glass, central locking, electric windows and a Blaupunkt Berlin radio, one of the finest and most expensive car radios available at the time. It is truly amazing how well this time capsule has been preserved, the beautiful paintwork is still original, as is the special green Pullman interior. Its modest mileage of 98,228 kilometres is a testament to its excellent and original condition. The exquisite details, such as the woodwork and bright headliner, look as good as new and the seats show no signs of wear at all.

What really sets this car apart is how well and comfortably it drives. Under the bonnet is a powerful 6.9 M100 V8 engine producing 286 bhp, coupled to a 3-speed gearbox and torque converter system that ensures a smooth transition to optimum performance without jolts, providing the best possible driving comfort. The car's suspension was revolutionary, with a hydro-pneumatic system that was a complete departure from the steel spring systems used on other models. The combination of this suspension with the starting torque compensator, anti-squat device on the rear axle and anti-dive control on the front axle results in an exceptional level of comfort. Nothing is missing from this car, from the original stamped service book, owner's manual and service handbook to the delivery receipt with data card.

If you are looking for the ultimate Mercedes-Benz in a very original but also very high quality and perfect running condition, then this is the car for you. Its history also makes it one of the most coveted models by true collectors. Don't wait any longer and discover it now at Rock 'n Roll Classics.
