Rarely have opinions on a design been so divided as at the time of the unveiling of the Alfa Romeo SZ, and that was exactly what Zagato and master designer Robert Opron intended. The SZ was to be a car that evokes emotions, one that polarises and ensures that the design continues to cross tongues. It was not the first time Zagato had laid down an extraordinaire design for Alfa Romeo and the SZ's popularity ensured that it was not the last either. Only a thousand or so SZs were assembled manually, making "Il Mostro" a rare yet welcome sight on today's streetscape. Of those thousand or so SZs made, only 13 were given the honour of being adapted into a single-model racing series at circuits across Europe, but mainly in Italy at venues such as Imola, Misano, Mugello and Imola.

Now we should manage to get exactly one of these 13 examples in, rarer than this it won't get today! Like the regular SZ, the colour combinations to choose from were hugely limited and almost all of them were released in red, our example is therefore in exceptionally good condition but already managed to prove its worth on the track. The fibreglass bodywork including the rear wing looks exactly like the original bodywork but was made much lighter and built on the original steel chassis.
The luxurious sports interior of the SZ gave way to a full, FIA-regulated racing interior and is to this day ready to go unsafe on any track. The cream of the crop in this rare example is the heart of this Italian fury, the 3.0-litre 12-valve Busso V6 engine, which is almost identical to the street versions of the SZ and RZ but has as a major modification the balanced internals and a different tuning that provide a lot of spectacle and bring a whopping 320hp to the rear wheels. Moreover, the engine is completely new and apart from a few test drives barely used.

Get in this car, start the engine, drive extremely sharp times and you will never want another track car, moreover, due to its limited edition it is hugely sought after by many Alfa Romeo collectors.
