The McLaren M4A is one of the purest and most beautiful expressions of McLaren’s early racing DNA — light, razor-sharp, and engineered with absolute purpose. Designed by Robin Herd in 1967, the M4A shared much of its philosophy with McLaren’s Formula 1 and Can-Am projects of the same year. It was the very first customer Formula 2 car to wear the McLaren name, combining cutting-edge design with the accessibility and versatility that made it a favourite among talented privateers.

According to its official Trojan verification certificate, this car — chassis 200-13 — was delivered new on 17 November 1967 to The Chequered Flag Racing Team, one of Britain’s most active and respected private teams of the late 1960s. Few M4As were ever built, and even fewer survive today in such outstanding condition. What truly sets this example apart is its restoration. Very few historic race cars are brought back to this level. The M4A has been rebuilt to the highest standards, with no expense spared to ensure precision, performance and reliability.
- The tub was rebuilt by Marc Bahner, the leading McLaren chassis expert, using the original bulkheads to guarantee perfect geometry.
- The Cosworth-Ford FVA 1.6-litre engine — one of the most iconic powerplants of the era — was completely rebuilt by Dave Vegher, and has covered only one race weekend (less than 12 hours) since completion.
- The Hewland FT200 gearbox was fully rebuilt by J&L Fabrication, fitted with all-new internals and REM-treated components, a process costing more than $35,000.
- The bodywork is immaculate, showing no previous repairs or structural damage, finished to concours presentation throughout.
Accompanying the car is its official McLaren by Trojan Verification Certificate, signed in 2000 by Chairman P.J. Agg — confirmation of its authenticity within the original McLaren production records.
Today, chassis 200-13 is a running, driving example that performs every bit as impressively as it looks. The engine starts eagerly, the gearbox shifts with precision, and the car feels light, alive, and utterly pure — exactly what a 1960s Formula 2 McLaren should be.

Eligible for Historic Formula 2, Masters Historic Racing, and several FIA-sanctioned single-seater series, this McLaren offers its next owner access to eligible events. Whether you wish to compete at the front of a Historic grid or simply add one of McLaren’s earliest and most exquisite creations to your collection, this is an exceptional opportunity.
A significant and fabulous McLaren — restored to perfection, officially certified, beautifully prepared, and ready to be driven, raced, and admired
